What is the difference between the InfraCal Blend Analyzers and the InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer?

The InfraCal Blend Analyzer is a single wavelength analyzer that is preset for one analysis, either FAME/biodiesel in diesel or ethanol in gasoline/petrol.  The InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer is a spectral range analyzer like an FTIR so it has the capability of measuring more than one component (ie. FAME/biodiesel in diesel AND ethanol in gasoline/petrol with the same analyzer.

Can the analyzers perform measurements other than those listed on the chart above?

The measurements listed on the chart have been tested for performance. While it is feasible to make other measurements, we have not listed any other than those we have tested.  Please let us know if you have a specific analysis and we will let you know whether or not it is feasible.

Do the analyzers come calibrated for FAME (biodiesel) in diesel or ethanol in petrol/gasoline?

The analyzers can have a non-certified factory calibration for FAME (biodiesel) in diesel or ethanol in petrol/gasoline, for a fee.  We have standards available for purchase and detailed instructions for download at no charge for preparing standards and performing calibration.

How often does the analyzer need to be recalibrated?

The initial calibration should last for several years.  We recommend checking the calibration as often as needed to feel confident of the performance.

Do the InfraCal & InfraSpec Analyzers require installation, commissioning or training?

Our InfraCal Analyzers & InfraSpec Spectrometers are portable, easy-to-use instruments requiring no installation or commissioning and minimal training as they are designed for use by non-technical personnel.  All of our manuals and procedures are available on our website for use prior to purchase.  On-site group training is available for a fee.

Are the analyzers ASTM approved?

For biodiesel blend analysis, there is currently a method with a work group number in process ASTM D6751 biodiesel production requires a number of different technologies for the various measurements  The InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer is ideal for biodiesel production measurements that will help ensure that the biodiesel will pass the final D6751 laboratory test An ASTM Method for FAME (biodiesel) in diesel for the InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer is currently up for ballot and should pass in 2011.

How do the Wilks Analyzers compare to other methods?

This chart displays results of a test conducted by an independent laboratory comparing the InfraCal Biodiesel Blend Analyzer and the InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer to the EN 14078 and ASTM D7371 FAME/biodiesel blend methods.

This chart contains the results of the comparison of the InfraSpec VFA-IR Spectrometer to the ASTM D7371 Method for percent FAME in diesel performed by several independent laboratories.
