With over 3,500 Wilks oil and grease monitors in world-wide use today, InfraCal Analyzers have become a standard for the petrochemical industry for ensuring oil content levels in water, drill cuttings or soil are below the regulated limit.

The fact that InfraCal Analyzers over 10 years old are still operating in the corrosive environment of offshore oil rigs attests to their rugged, dependability. The analysis procedure takes less than 15 minutes and can be done by minimally trained personnel. They use field proven infrared technology for measuring oil in water, oil content in drilling mud or drill cuttings, TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbons) in soil and FOG (fats, oil and grease) in wastewater.

The new InfraCal 2, the latest introduction to our easy to use analyzers, uses the same measurement technology as our InfraCal TOG/TPH Analyzers with added features such as data storage and transfer, multiple calibrations and password protection for instrument settings. The InfraCal Analyzers are stand-alone fixed filter infrared instruments that give results that are comparable to EPA 1664 and ISO 9377-2 and comply with ASTM D7066, EPA 413.2 and 418.1.

Calibration

Calibration Information

It is important to note that all InfraCal Oil in Water/Soil Analyzers can be ordered with or without a factory calibration. The InfraCal 2 Model ATR-SP and TRANS-SP can store multiple calibrations. Calibration of the analyzer enables it to directly display oil/grease concentration levels in parts per million (ppm) or milligram/kg.

  • Factory Calibration by Wilks

Wilks can provide the InfraCal Analyzers with a factory calibration using any of the calibration standards, prepared by a certified laboratory, we have available for purchase. This prepares the analyzer for immediate use once received by the customer. Factory calibrations are available for water and soil, please specify which at the time you order your InfraCal Analyzer. This option is strongly recommended for international customers, as well as those US customers who do not require a certified calibration or do not wish to calibrate the analyzer themselves.

  • Certified Laboratory Calibration by Independent Testing Lab

The InfraCal Analyzers can be calibrated by a certified laboratory. For our U.S. customer's, we recommend laboratories such as Petroleum Laboratories Inc., 337-234-7414 or Sherry Laboratories, 800-737-2378 or 337-235-0483. The standards can be made from the customer's own oil sample or from a heavy weight oil. Standards are prepared on weight/volume basis. The standards can be verified against EPA Method 413.1 or 1664 for an extra charge. Please contact Petroleum Laboratories or Sherry Laboratories directly for more information and pricing concerning their calibration service. If you are outside the U.S. and require a Certified Laboratory Calibration, you will need to locate a lab in your respective country that can provide this service for you.

Applications

Applications

The InfraCal Analyzers for measuring oil in water or soil can be used for a number of different applications. The InfraCal 2 with multiple calibration capability can be calibrated for different types and ranges of measurement. Our primary applications are listed below.

  • TOG/TPH in Produced Water
    As offshore oil wells age, the increase of produced water challenges wastewater treatment systems. Infrared analysis has been used for off-shore oil in water measurements for over 45 years. Infrared is an accepted oil content measurement as it is least affected by changes in produced water composition.

  • FOG in Wastewater
    For industrial pretreatment of wastewater and public water treatment plants a simplified procedure for monitoring FOG discharges can avoid fines, sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and give on-site results in less than 15 minutes rather than waiting days or weeks for an off-site laboratory result.

  • Sub-ppm Oil in Water
    As fresh water is becoming recognized as a limited resource around the world, effluent discharge regulations are becoming more stringent—often requiring an oil in water measurement of less than 1 ppm. InfraCal 2 Analyzer is the newest addition to the worldwide-recognized Wilks InfraCal line of portable, filter-based infrared analyzers. The intuitive touch screen interface gives non-technical users on-site results in less than 15 minutes. New electronics and optics improve the sensitivity allowing for sub ppm detection of oil in water.

  • TPH in Soil Remediation
    The InfraCal Analyzers allow for TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) in soil testing at remediation sites such as leaking underground storage tanks, frac water holding ponds, produced water evaporation ponds or oil spills. Site managers can avoid having costly soil remediation equipment sit idle while waiting for off-site lab results. Sampling takes less than 15 minutes and requires a few simple steps that can be performed by non-technical personnel.

  • Oil Content in Frac Water
    Whether flowback and produced water from a hydraulic fracturing site is getting cleaned up for the next fracture, going to an off-site treatment facility, evaporation ponds or going through thermal or membrane desalination for agricultural use or surface discharge, removing the oil is typically the first step. Testing the effectiveness of the oil removal system can be especially important if the risk is fouling a membrane or incurring a regulatory fine.

  • Oil in Drill Cuttings
    The large amounts of drill cuttings produced in off-shore drilling require meeting an allowable limit on total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) for ocean disposal. The North Sea currently has a 1% limit. Transporting cuttings to shore is labor intensive, costly and could cease due to bad weather. Limit requirements also must be met for on-shore disposal or reuse.

  • Oil in Water in the Petrochemical Industry
    Measuring the oil content in water or soil is a specialty of Wilks. InfraCal Analyzersprovide on-site ppm measurements to help ensure your upstream or downstream wastewater complies with discharge permits and avoid potentially-costly fines.
